The Secret Diary of Lydia Bennet: A Mini ARC Review

The Secret Diary of Lydia Bennet: A Mini ARC Review

When I first heard of this book, I wasn’t so sure. The cover definitely isn’t the best thing, and it sounds like a copycat of The Secret Diary of Lydia Bennet from the Youtube Lizzie Bennet Diaries series. But it’s really not. And I’m glad that I read it. It was a pleasant surprise that I really enjoyed. BTW: I’ve seen a better alternate cover and a different title: The Wild Girl of Pride and Prejudice. So I’m not sure which one came first. But here’s the other cover that’s on Goodreads: Definitely that’s better than the one on my copy though. […]

Dear Emma: A Unique Take on a Classic Austen Story

Dear Emma: A Unique Take on a Classic Austen Story

If you’ve read Emma by Jane Austen, you’d know that the premise of that book is about Emma meddling in her friends’ lives, mostly match-making. She’s endearing in a get-out-of-everyone’s-business kind of way. Katie Heaney takes that story and placed it in a modern, college setting, a concept I was very intrigued by. Overall, I enjoyed Dear Emma, and I found her really relatable, especially to me as an English-major college student who works in the library. But it wasn’t my favorite, which is why it sits at a solid three stars. I really did love Harriet (the main character) in this book. She’s just very relatable […]

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: A Mini Book Review

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: A Mini Book Review

If you know anything about me…at all…you’d know that I am a huge Jane Austen fan. Her books are like home to me, and I love them dearly. You’re probably wondering why, then, I chose to read this book, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, that seems to sully the great Pride and Prejudice classic with none other than zombies. Flesh-eating zombies. Mostly, I read this since the movie is coming out. But we also talked about it a little in my YA lit class last semester when we were talking about post-modernism. Basically post-modernism is a movement where artists and authors and […]

The Epic Adventures of Lydia Bennet: A Book Review

The Epic Adventures of Lydia Bennet: A Book Review

First off, let’s make sure you know everything you need to know. If you don’t already know, there’s a phenomenal Youtube series called The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. It’s essentially a modern-day retelling of Pride and Prejudice, told through a web-series…which is pretty awesome if you ask me. Anyway, I discovered this series like a year and half ago or so during my finals week. Which gave me great reason to procrastinate because I just wanted to watch all of the episodes. I rave about the web-series here. And theeeeen, they wrote a book based on the web-series. Which is also awesome. It’s essentially Lizzie’s diary while they’re filming […]

The Weight of Feathers: A Book Review

The Weight of Feathers: A Book Review

So let’s talk about this book. First off, it’s awesome because it’s a retelling of the ever-so-famous Romeo and Juliet. And if you know me, you’d know that I’m all about the retellings. They’re fun and shed new light and perspective on timeless and classic stories. I actually did my TTT post this past Tuesday on Classic Retellings…so you should check that out if you haven’t already. But one of my biggest pet peeves with retellings is when the story is almost exactly the same. And this was not the case with The Weight of Feathers. WoF brings in the classic rivalry between two […]
