Looking Back: January 2017

Posted February 1, 2017 by Carlisa in Looking Back / 3 Comments

This is the first time I’ve done a Looking Back post since August. . . .

Basically I’ve been the worst blogger ever, and I only post a couple times a month, if that. But I really, really want to be better. So do you forgive me? Okay, good. Anyway, now it’s February, and big things are happening in my life. Big, scary, what-the-heck-am-I-doing-with-my-life things. But let’s get started, shall we?

What I…

  • Have Been Trying to Figure Out: If you didn’t know, I’m about to graduate with a BA in English and editing. And so about 77% of my time right now goes to scrolling through Indeed.com and LinkedIn, trying to figure out what I’m going to do with my life come May. I mean, editing, of course. That’s what I want to do. But most book editing jobs are in New York, and I’m all the way over here in Utah. So I’m looking into all editing and writing around where I am and beyond. (Let me know if you hear anything, okay?)
  • Am Getting Ready For: So I’ve done a few freelance projects, both with writing and editing, here and there. But I’m going to start promoting myself and working a lot harder at freelancing! You’ll probably hear more info about this soon, but be on the look-out for it!

That’s basically it. My life is just school, my internship, my job, and now job-searching. And some interspersed Criminal Minds and This is Us binge-watching sessions, of course. But for real, I keep myself pretty busy. That’s good, right? Hahahaha *starts crying*

What I Read in January…

I also just read Welcome Home by Eric Smith, but it is as yet coverless and unpublished. I just finished copyediting it for my internship with Jolly Fish Press, and I absolutely loved it. If you don’t know, it’s an anthology of short stories, all related to adoption. And there’s contemporary, there’s fantasy, there’s sci-fi. There’s happy stories, sad stories, hopeful stories. It’s just a beautiful conglomeration of feelings, and you should read it when it comes out later this year.

The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry ★★★
Kat, Incorrigible by Stephanie Burgis ★★1/2
Passenger by Alexandra Bracken ★★★★★
The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick ★★★★★
Welcome Home by Eric Smith ★★★★★

Ten Underrated Books You Should Definitely Read

How was your January? Read any good books? Write any good posts? Let me know in the comments!

  • Gaaah, the “now what?” time of life. Good luck! I hope you figure something out and don’t get too overwhelmed with choices and feeling in limbo. *hugs*

Do you like This Is Us? I really want to watch it, since I’ve heard it compared to Parenthood, one of my favorite shows.

I read The Bear and the Nightingale last month and loved it! I really think you would, too.

I actually started guest blogging on my boyfriend’s blog! So far we’ve been co-writing TTT posts and we just did a discussion post. I wasn’t sure if I’d like it, but so far it’s been really fun. 😀

    • Ahh thank you for your hugs and support. It means a lot to me <3

I *really* like This Is Us! Even more than I liked Parenthood! I think you should definitely try it.

And The Bear and the Nightingale in on my TBR! I fell in love with the cover, and the premise sounds really amazing too. *Puts it on hold at the library as we speak*

That's exciting that you started blogging! If you don't mind my knowning, what's your boyfriend's blog so I can check it out?

      • Wow, what a recommendation! So exited to start it.

Which cover? U.S. or U.K.? I really like both, but the U.K. one really doesn’t fit the story. XD

Of course not! I’d be happy for you to read it. 🙂 It’s http://buecher-monster.de (The blog itself is in german, so don’t be alarmed, but may of the posts are in English.)
