My Excitement for Fantasic Beasts | Potterhead July

Why I'm Excited for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

I’m writing this as part of Potterhead July—an event that Aentee from Read at Midnight set up!

Let me just take you on my own little Harry Potter journey. In fourth grade, I read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and I was immediately taken. At that point, the first five books had already been published, and I ate them up. Then when the sixth and seventh books came out, I’d go and buy them the day of publication and read them in one or two days—staying up late, late, late. I remember once I fell asleep reading the last one and I dreamt that I woke up and started reading again. So my dream-self made up all these stories and characters and dialogue. Let me tell you, I was very confused when I woke up and really started reading again. Lol.

And the movies. I loved those, too. When I hit my craze, I went to the last few movies at midnight premieres where everyone would dress up, and they were so fun. Anyways, that’s basically it. I just loved them. I dressed up as Trelawney once for Halloween. I went to the Wizarding World in Orlando as a sophomore in high school. And that’s what it seemed like it was going to be. I’ve just been excited for when I have a family someday that I can experience Harry Potter with.

But now the story continues. With Eddie Redmayne (who’s my #1 celebrity crush, by the way). And I’m so ready, so excited. Let’s start with the new trailer that came out yesterday:

OH MY GOSH. It looks so good, am I right? And I think what I love about it is that it’s a completely new story, a completely new set of characters, a completely new time than the original story. I’m going to be honest, I don’t know how I’m going to feel about the Cursed Child (of course, I still already have it on pre-order) because I like where the Harry Potter books ended…so it makes me hesitant to continue with that story.

But Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them…? It’s completely new. With new insight into the Harry Potter world in 1920s New York City! I love that setting. And I’m so excited to start this new journey through what I’ve heard is the Fantastic Beasts trilogy.

I also love that we have no idea what to really expect besides what’s in the trailer. There’s no published book that lays out this story. We have the Fantastic Beasts textbook that “Newt Scamander” wrote, but it’s not a narrative. We’re essentially going in blind, but I think it’s going to be all the more amazing for it, don’t you?

Basically: I’m just ready to experience an entirely new side of the Wizarding World. A side that’s not influenced by Harry and Voldemort’s journey—no matter how much I love that journey of theirs. New characters, new cast, new ideas, new creature, new setting, new time. It’s going to be wonderful because it’s going to be so new. Do you feel me? Do you feel my excitement? Are you getting excited too? If not…

welp

There’s not much I can do for you at this point. But I’m proud of you for reading this far.

Are you excited for the new Fantastic Beasts movie? What are your feelings about it? Let me know in the comments!

I’m very excited for the movie, and also for the screenplay to be published. I already have the screenplay on pre-order!

    • I kind of forgot that the screenplay was going to be published! Is it going to be published the same day the movie comes out?

  • I’m very interested int he movie, although I think I’ll wait for critical reviews and more opinions to come out before I decide to rent it… It sounds interesting, but I feel like if anything lately Rowling has shown that she isn’t particularly good about writing about America? So I’m not entirely sure what the movie is going to look like, and I realize I’m taking a “guilty until proven innocent” stance, but this movie is actually somewhat concerning to me…

    • Yeah I’ve heard some concerning things about her origins of magic in America stories. Hopefully it’ll turn out okay, but I’ll be keeping a wary eye as well.

  • Haley Keller

I just haven’t been able to get excited for the movie even though I’ve tried over and over. Of course, I’m still going to see it, and I hope I end up liking it. I do think it has potential. It’s just that nothing we’ve seen so far (or read on Pottermore) has really grabbed me like I imagined it would.

    • Yeah, I don’t really read the stuff on Pottermore because I don’t think I’d super like it. And HP and the Cursed Child wasn’t my favorite. I’m just hoping to really love this one. And the newest trailer makes it look phenomenal.

  • I’M EXCITED TOO. From the first trailer with the “lumos maxima” on it I just want to cry omg. I’m so excited for this oneee! I agree, I don’t know how I feel about The Cursed Child because DH already ties everything smoothly and I don’t think it’s necessary. While Fantastic Beast gives us new insight of the wizarding world. I can’t wait!!

    • Have you seen the newest trailer?? (Sorry it’s taken me so long to comment back!) The new one about blew my mind and made me want November here NOW.

  • It’s definitely going to be an interesting experience. We’ve gone into every movie knowing what’s going to happen (if we read the books beforehand), but with this one it should come with a few surprises.

    • Yes! I love that we won’t know. Hopefully I’ll still love it when I DO know. But the surprises are bound to be great.
